SDG Challenge

Background: Scouts Australia’s Sustainability team approached me to develop a brand for their implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, known as the SDG Challenge. The challenge covers 17 different goals and targets all ages of youth members, from five to twenty-six years old. The client wanted a solution that would allow the youth to create unique logos that represented them and their challenge.

Challenge: The main challenge was to create a branding solution that would be appealing to children and represent the diverse youth members and the wide range of projects they can undertake as part of the SDG Challenge. Additionally, it was important for the branding to be easily recognizable and memorable.

Solution: I created a parametric design system using Blender, a free and open-source computer graphics software toolset. The system, named Infinite Circle, allows for the creation of infinite versions of the logo, giving the youth the ability to create a unique logo that represents them and their challenge. I used the bright and varied colors of the UNSDG color scheme, one for each of the 17 goals, to represent the diversity of the challenge.

For the typography, I selected Dela Gothic One, a bold and wide typeface, to convey an exciting and approachable feel. The combination of the parametric design system, bright colors, and bold typography effectively represents the diversity and inclusivity of the SDG Challenge while being easily recognizable and memorable.

Results: The branding solution was well received by Scouts Australia’s Sustainability team and has been implemented across all materials related to the SDG Challenge. The Infinite Circle parametric design system allows for the youth to create unique logos that represent them and their challenge, increasing engagement and participation in the program. The bright colours and bold typography effectively represent the diversity and inclusivity of the challenge and has helped to increase recognition and understanding of the SDG Challenge among the youth members.
